One of the first things you will have to decide is whether you prefer a framed, semi-frameless or frameless shower enclosure.
Framed showers have a metal frame that surrounds the entire structure and holds the glass in place.
There are no exposed edges. The frame is a necessity because, in most cases, the glass doors are made of thin, relatively inexpensive glass that is only about 1/8″ to 3/16″ thick. Not only do these thin doors lack durability, but the metal frame attracts soap residue, mildew and rust. Framed shower doors are the least expensive option.
Semi-frameless showers also feature metal around all four sides, but the door itself does not have a frame.
It only has a track along the bottom for support and to prevent drips. The glass thickness can be 1/4” or 3/8”. The bottom track can still attract soap scum, mold and mildew that will require cleaning. Semi-frameless showers are an economical alternative to fully frameless showers, but still provide a high-end look in your bathroom.
Frameless showers are not completely metal-free, but you primarily see only hardware and glass.
There may be metal channels supporting heavy panels of glass, or metal caps at the corners of the doors and extra-strength hinges. To qualify as “frameless”, the glass thickness must be 3/8-inch or ½-inch, which is significantly thicker than average shower glass. The small amount of metal does not interfere with the clean, elegant look of the shower. Frameless showers are easy to maintain because there are no metal tracks to attract grime. Frameless showers are often much more affordable than you may think.
