Nothing looks classier and more elegant! Because these doors lack the metal support that holds a shower together, the glass itself is usually much thicker than average shower glass. In fact, a minimum thickness of 3/8 of an inch is necessary to give it enough strength to stand on its own!
For additional support you might find a frameless door with reinforced metal caps at the corners of the doors and extra-strength hinges. These metal fixtures are useful for holding the glass panels in place but are small enough that they don’t interfere with the clean and crisp look that a glass shower should bring.
Frameless also means that there is no metal track to collect soap scum, dirt or residue.
They are much easier to maintain. In most cases, all you’ll need to keep them clean is a simple squeegee.
Those of you who may be looking for a slightly more-affordable option might consider getting a semi-frameless enclosure. These have the additional support of a metal header that runs across the top of the shower and a limited side frame along with a bottom track. The difference is that the frame only encompasses the top, sides, and bottom of the shower but the doors themselves have no frame, which still gives a clear and unobstructed view from either inside or outside of the shower.
This type of shower enclosure is considerably less than the fully frameless shower, but still gives the same open feeling overall. However, there is still a bottom track that can over time accumulate mold, mildew, dust and grime that will need to be cleaned regularly.
The fact is that there’s a perfect shower type and design for every style and every budget.
