The first thing to decide is how much space in your bathroom you want to use for a shower enclosure. Walk-in showers can be as small as 36-by-36 inches. However, if you currently have a tub/shower combination and no longer need the tub, you should have a generous 60 inches in width to work with.
Will your new shower have doors?
Doors can be installed with and without metal frames. Semi-frameless showers limit the amount of metal supports and create a high-end look. Frameless showers are made from thicker than normal 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch glass and can stand on their own with just a few metal channels or metal caps at the corners of the doors and extra-strength hinges.
Door-less walk-in showers are a hot trend in bathroom design; they are low-maintenance and accessible to people with disabilities when the threshold (or “curb”) is eliminated and a built-in shower seat installed.

Shower Enclosure Design Tips
- If you are planning for a hinged shower door, be sure the wall on which you would like it installed has proper studding behind it to anchor the hinges and panels. Also, most building codes require hinged doors to open outwards.
- A great alternative to the standard corner shower is a neo angle, or diamond-shaped, shower, which features three glass sides enclosing two walls. Another stylish choice is the 90-degree shower which has glass on two sides. Doors will need to be a minimum of 22″ wide and no more than 36″ wide.
- Wall mount doors are less expensive than glass-to-glass mounted doors.
- All shower glass requires some type of mechanical support, such as channel or clamps. And shower glass that does not extend all the way to the ceiling will need some form of top support if a door is to be hinged off of it.
- Will your shower enclosure be flush with the floor or have a curb or lip? Curbs help prevent water from leaking or pooling onto the bathroom floor. It’s important to properly construct curbs with an inward slope of about five degrees so that water will flow toward the drain.
- Built-in shower seats should also slant toward the drain at five degrees to eliminate standing water, mold and mildew.
