When you’re considering a cabinet makeover in your kitchen or bathroom, we think it’s important to know what factors to look for to be sure you get the best value for the price.

How to Evaluate Cabinet Quality

The saying, “beauty is only skin deep” also applies to wood cabinets. While you want them to look great, high-quality cabinets need to be strong, durable and usable much more than they need to be beautiful. Here are some tips for finding high-quality cabinets for your kitchen or bathroom.

Materials

If you want your cabinets to last, the most important factor is the material they are made from. Things like screw holding power and susceptibility to moisture and humidity will vary based on the material used in the cabinet’s construction.

Opt for plywood or solid wood cabinet boxes instead of those made from particle board or MDF. Particle board and MDF are susceptible to water damage. Particle board may also emit formaldehyde vapors based on the adhesives used to bond the wood particles.

Also look at the wood thickness. Cabinets usually come in thicknesses between 3/8-inch and 3/4-inch. Thicker is better. But even a 1/2-inch thickness of plywood will be stronger and more durable than 3/4-inch of particle board.

Corner Gussets

The corner gussets are those small pieces of wood, most often triangle-shaped, that you’ll find in the inside corners of the cabinets to give them strength. Bigger is generally better.

Good quality gussets are made from solid wood or plywood and secured into dado slots cut into the cabinet’s side, front and back panels or attached with screws. There should be no wiggling or gaps. Thinner gussets that are made from particle board and glued or stapled in place are not as good.

Some cabinet manufacturers make corner gussets from plastic. Thick plastic that’s fastened securely to the side panels is better than flimsy plastic.

Panels and Shelves

Look for side, bottom and back panels that are about 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch thick. Some cabinets come with thin back panels, but keep in mind that the cabinet plus the weight of its contents will be supported by this panel. Thicker is better.

The shelves are another key factor because they will carry the major part of the load inside the cabinet. In general, shelf thicknesses range from 1/2-inch to to 3/4-inch. Again, thicker is better and more rigid than thinner shelves.

Good quality cabinets will have adjustable shelves which are more versatile than fixed shelves. The hardware that holds them up should be strong; look for metal clips and supports instead of wood or plastic.

Drawers

There are several methods of joint construction for drawers – dovetailed joints, doweled or rabbet joints, glue and staples, or some combination. Dovetailed joints are the most durable, followed by doweled and rabbet joints. Glued and stapled joints are lower in quality.

Also check out the drawer bottoms and slides. They should be dadoed (fit into grooves) into the drawer sides instead of just stapled or nailed to the drawer box. As for drawer slides, metal ball-bearing slides will last longer than nylon or plastic.
