There are many finishes and options available in all price ranges, so it should be easy to find something you love. But it’s important to know some cabinet “lingo” to understand what you’re buying.
Stock Cabinets
Stock cabinets are ready-made, pre-manufactured cabinets, which means they are mass-produced in a factory and ready to ship when you order them. You will typically find them at big box home improvement stores.
They come in many different sizes and choices of colors and styles, but what you see is what you get. You cannot customize them. You may find two or more grades of stock cabinets, one made from the lowest cost materials with simulated wood finish, and a higher grade made from better materials and real wood finishes.
If you’re on a tight budget and your room is not unique, stock cabinets can be a good option, however, they may not last as long as better cabinets. Stock cabinets are a popular choice for landlords and people fixing up a house to sell.
Semi-Custom Cabinets
These are essentially stock cabinets that allow for some alteration.
They are usually manufactured in stock sizes, but you’ll be able to change some of the dimensions, such as the width, depth or height, to fit your kitchen or bath design.
Semi-custom cabinets are available in several grades, ranging from good quality units with a decent variety of options to high-quality models with a bigger assortment of options and features.
The advantages of semi-custom cabinets are their design flexibility.
They may also be a better grade of cabinet than standard stock cabinets. But too many alterations can drive up the price close to or above custom cabinets.
Unless your heart is set on some design, feature, or unique request, semi-custom cabinets often provide the best option. However, they can take weeks/months to be delivered, and the attention to detail may not be the same as craftsman quality, custom made cabinets.
Custom Cabinets
Although custom cabinetry can be more expensive, it gives homeowners the most options. Custom cabinets are often built on-site or off-site by a skilled cabinet maker, but may be manufactured to order as well.
This may sound expensive, and custom cabinetry will cost more than stock cabinets, but every cabinet is built to order to the exact requirements of your space. The design you end up with will be completely unique to your home.
Because they are more labor-intensive to build, custom cabinets will usually take a few weeks or longer to complete. However, you should be able to get the exact design you want, wood species, color, features and size, all crafted in superior quality.
No matter which type of cabinets you ultimately choose, consider carefully removing your old cabinets and donating them to a program such as your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They use the proceeds from sales to build homes in the community and around the world.
