To give you a better feel for the factors that affect cabinet quality, it’s important to understand how they’re put together.

If MDF sounds like a government agency, toe kicks sound like the latest dance craze, and thermofoil sounds like something they would use on the Space Shuttle, the following glossary may help!

Cabinet Glossary of Terms

  • Base cabinet– This is the cabinet that sits on the floor and provides support for the countertops.
  • Box – Often called the “carcass,” the box makes up the basic structure of the cabinet. Cabinet boxes can vary in quality.
  • Custom cabinets – Built to a customer’s specifications, custom cabinets are made to order and have no limitations on materials, sizes and options. Semi-custom cabinets offer standard sizes and styles but allow for some amount of customization, while stock cabinets are off-the-shelf cabinets in standard sizes with limited options.
  • Face frame– This refers to a wood frame that’s attached to the front edges of “framed” or “face-frame” cabinets and adds to their strength. Cabinet doors are attached to them.
  • Finish– Much like the paint on your car, the finish on a cabinet is the surface coating that protects and maintains the beauty and durability of the wood surface.
  • Frameless – Frameless cabinets are designed without a frame on the front outside edges. There will typically be nothing more than a thin veneer edge banding which the cabinet doors will cover when closed.
  • Medium density fiberboard (MDF)– MDF is an engineered wood-based product that combines wood fibers with glue or resin as a bonding agent. It’s easier to shape than particle board and can be used for cabinet doors, shelves and other parts.
  • Melamine – This is a plastic-based material, like a laminate, that is applied to the outside of cabinets, most often those made of MDF, particle board or plywood.
  • Particle board– This is another engineered wood product composed of tiny wood fragments that are fused together with a glue or resin under mechanical pressure. Particle board is used for cabinet boxes, drawers and shelves. Another form of particle board is called “flakeboard” or “furniture board.”
  • Plywood– An engineered wood product that is composed of layers of wood with grains running at different angles to give it more strength and stability.
  • Refacing – Refacing cabinets involves removing old cabinet doors and drawer fronts and replacing them with new ones. Refacing is generally done by veneering the cabinet boxes with a real wood veneer, such as oak, cherry, walnut, birch or maple, and should be done by a professional craftsman for the best results.
  • Thermofoil– Thermofoil is a thin sheet of vinyl material that, like veneer, is bonded to a wood or wood-product substrate. The vinyl material can make cabinet surfaces easy to keep clean.
  • Toe kick – This refers to the recessed space under the base cabinet that allows room for your toes when you’re standing at the cabinet.
  • Veneer – A veneer is a very thin layer of real wood that is bonded to another material. In cabinetry, veneers are typically used to cover plywood or particle board. Veneers provide the look of solid wood without the cost.
