Important Questions for Your Custom Cabinet Maker

  1. Can I see and approve the drawings beforehand? The design and layout of the cabinets can make or break the feel and usefulness of your kitchen or bathroom. Don’t leave anything to chance. With kitchens, in particular, you’ll want to be sure your new cabinets will hold everything you need and that they’ll be handy. For instance, you may want a cabinet that holds your pots and pans located near your range or oven. Checking and approving the design and layout before the cabinets are built will ensure that everything fits the way you intended. Ask as many questions as necessary.
  2. What materials will the cabinets be made from? There’s nothing like solid wood for creating a beautiful kitchen, bath or other room in your home. With custom cabinetry, you should have a wide range of choices. Most cabinet boxes are made from particle board, MDF or plywood, and panels are usually covered in wood veneer, plastic laminate/melamine or thermofoil. Solid wood is typically used only for the face-frame on framed cabinets. Full plywood box construction is the best for longevity.
  3. What types of hardware do you use? The functionality of your cabinets will largely depend on the interior hardware in the base cabinetry.  Soft close hardware is a sign of good quality and will keep your cabinet doors and drawers opening and closing with ease.
  4. Will you finish the cabinets in the shop or in my home? Shop-finished cabinets are best. Reputable cabinetmakers should have a shop with a controlled, dust-free environment. Finishing cabinets in your home will stir up dust and make it harder to get a smooth finish. Finishing materials are sensitive to temperature, so finishing on the job site where the temperature can be too warm or too cold can be problematic. Some finishes also contain toxic chemicals; it’s preferable to avoid having them in your home.
  5. How long will it take to make and install the cabinets? This answer could make or break the deal. Custom cabinets can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on where you buy them, the options you’ve selected, and the cabinet maker’s backlog and capacity. Six to eight weeks is average, and it’s best to have the walls painted and all appliances, sinks, fixtures and lighting in place or on hand when the cabinets are installed. Make sure you find out if installation is included in the price or not.
  6. Do you provide a warranty and what does it cover? A reputable cabinet maker will provide a warranty on his or her workmanship. If not, walk away. If there is a warranty, get it in writing and be sure you understand what it does and does not cover.
