The options are endless, but custom cabinets don’t sit on store shelves.
It will typically take six to eight weeks from purchase to construction to installation, and they may cost more than other options.
Here are our top tips on choosing cabinets and cabinet makers:
What makes a high-quality cabinet?
Always look for signs of high-quality construction, such as:
- The visible wood does not have knots, sanding scars, grain irregularities or color differences.
- Where two pieces of wood meet in a joint, the line between them should nearly disappear.
- The floor and back of the cabinet fits into a routed side panel.
- The cabinets have full extension, dove-tailed drawers.
- The plywood box (or carcass) has side and floor panels not less than 1/2-inch thick.
- The shelves are at least 3/4-inch thick and are supported by metal brackets, not plastic ones.
- Drawer sides are made from 5/8-inch or thicker hardwood and are routed with a groove that supports the base.
- Drawers supported by two side-mounted slides are much stronger than those with a single slide centered below. The quietest slides run on nylon bearings.
- Flat door panels and drawer fronts are crafted from solid pieces of wood.
- Door panels “float” inside deeply grooved frames instead of being glued or fastened. (This prevents cracking and allows them to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity.)
- You are offered a large selection of quality finishes.
How should I choose the wood?
This is best determined based on the size of the room.
Dark cabinets make small rooms feel smaller.
If your cabinets will be painted, the aesthetic appeal of solid wood will be lost.
MDF (medium-density fiberboard) accepts paint better than plywood and minimizes cracking. For stained cabinets, the most common choices are maple and cherry, but hickory and walnut have grown in popularity.
What should I look for in a cabinet maker?
Most reputable cabinetmakers will have a shop with a controlled, dust-free environment which will enable them to get a smooth finish on your cabinets.
Ask for references and ask to see examples of their work.
Most will be happy to show off their work. High prices do not equal quality.
Check their work, looking for the features of high-quality cabinets (in #1 above). Reputable cabinet makers will provide a warranty on their workmanship. If not, walk away. If there is a warranty, get it in writing and be sure you understand what it does and does not cover. Look for someone who is eager to answer all of your questions.
