While it’s not the only decision you will have to make when you remodel your kitchen, selecting the cabinets is one of the most important.

There are many types and styles of cabinets, and many homeowners are surprised to discover how confusing and time-consuming the process can be. Consider this explanation of the differences between kitchen cabinets as you plan your ideal kitchen.

Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets.

Solid wood cabinets are generally the most attractive, offering a look of elegance.  They are also very sturdy, but more expensive than other types of cabinets. Hardwoods such as red oak, white oak, cherry, maple, birch, ash and pine are common. Each wood species has pros and cons, from durability to appearance to cost. Most woods can be stained to adjust their color, but some are more stain-friendly than others.

Wood Veneer Kitchen Cabinets.

A veneer is a thin layer of hardwood that is glued over a core of soft wood, particleboard or MDF. This gives the appearance that the entire piece is built from the more valuable wood that you see on the surface, but is more economical than solid wood.

Because it’s real wood, a veneer can be painted and stained.

Laminate Kitchen Cabinets.

A less expensive alternative to wood cabinets or veneer, laminate is a man-made synthetic material (typically a plastic) that is glued onto particleboard or MDF. There are high-pressure and low-pressure laminate varieties. The high-pressure variety is more durable and will hold up to heavy usage in an average kitchen.

It doesn’t warp and resists fading.

Laminate cabinets can be a particularly good choice for contemporary or modern kitchens.

Thermofoil Kitchen Cabinets.

Thermofoil is a vinyl film that is applied to a plywood or particleboard base with heat and pressure and is better able to mimic the look of wood than laminate can. They are typically white or almond, easy to care for, and not as likely to chip as painted cabinets. If applied to poor quality or very thin particleboard, however, hinges may fall out, and excessive weight or humidity may cause them to warp or bend.

No matter which type of kitchen cabinets you ultimately decide upon, good planning will determine whether your remodeling project goes smoothly or is complicated by construction delays, cost overruns and inferior workmanship.
