Maximize the Space in Your Small Kitchen
When remodeling a small kitchen, it’s important to focus first on functionality, ensuring that you have the appliances, storage and work areas you need.
Use the limited square footage wisely:
- Scale down the appliances. Can you get away with a 2-burner stove and a single sink? How about a mid-sized refrigerator and a small microwave? You’ll have all of the functionality without taking up a lot of room.
- If you don’t have enough workspace, consider a small island or a cart with countertop that can be moved into the closet when you don’t need it.
- Use hanging pot racks and spice holders to keep your tools out of the cabinets but close at hand.
- If your overhead cabinets crowd the space, think about removing a few of them (that are hard to reach anyway), and make the space look larger with open shelves or colorful artwork.
- Choose countertops, cabinetry, fixtures, flooring, lighting and color that create interest and style but don’t take up space.
- Make use of the center of your kitchen.Create an island in the center of the kitchen that provides extra storage and is convenient from wherever you’re standing.
- Maximize the space inside your cabinets by installing lazy susans and roll-out shelves.
- Visually expand the space with glass. Enhance a backsplash with mirrors or reflective glass tile to make the room sparkle. Consider clear or opaque glass cabinet doors or even a glass kitchen door to eliminate a boxy feeling.
- Hanging pendant lights will bathe the room in a more appealing light than fluorescents. And consider adding lights under the base cabinets to shine down onto the floor.
- Make the floor look longer with floor tiles placed on a diagonal.
- Don’t be too timid with color. White is nice and a light color will reflect light to make the room look taller. But bold colors here and there can make a welcome splash in a small kitchen
Small kitchens may appear to be a design challenge, but they can also be functional, dazzling and efficient.
